FAQ's
How can I verify that any UV-C disinfection station, including UVone, is actually disinfecting devices?
LocknCharge’s kill rate claims are based on data conducted by an accredited laboratories.
If you’d like to validate our claims on your own, UV-C Dosimeters purchased through Intellego Technologies, a highly-accredited company, can measure the mJ dosage via a simple card. You can see how it works here.
MRSA and C.Diff
When exposed to an appropriate dose of UV-C, the yellow area on the card changes to orange and deep pink, which can be correlated to a 3-log reduction of MRSA and C.Diff, based on 50 and 100 mJ/cm² respectively.
When a card is placed inside the UVone unit for 30 seconds, the reading indicates 100 mJ dosage–which indicates a significant reduction for both MRSA and C.Diff.
SARS-CoV-2
According to a study conducted by Signify and Boston University, it was determined that a dose of 22mJ/cm2 will result in a reduction of 99.9999% in 25 seconds.
When a card is placed inside the UVone unit for 30 seconds, the reading indicates 100 mJ dosage–well above the 22mJ needed to kill SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
Why is SARS-CoV-2 disinfection rate lower than your overall 5-log kill denoted?
Current labs who are testing against the SARS-CoV-2 pathogen do not have concentrations of the virus sufficient to prove greater than 4-log reduction. While we believe a 6-log reduction is likely with the SARS-CoV-2 pathogen in the UVone, it is currently only possible to test against a 4-log concentration when compared with the control amount. This is why we only claim 4-log, though it is likely much greater than this.
In the study, it was observed that no pathogen survived the disinfection cycle of 30 seconds. Though it would be desirable to have proof of greater than 4-log reduction, the fact we were able to get this study showing a 4-log reduction in a BSL 3 laboratory setting from the University of Tennessee provides significant evidence of the effectiveness of the UVone against this devastating pathogen.
I connected to the WiFi as instructed, but now it is asking for a password. Where do I get my password?
Please contact Lockncharge Support for a password.
I downloaded the app, and it's prompting for an update. What do I do?
When prompted to update the app, simply follow the step-by-step instructions. First connect to WiFi. After doing so, open the UVone Configurator app, and click update. You will see your unit re-start. This may take a few minutes.
What does the "M" on the LCD screen stand for?
It stands for Manual Mode. This means you need to manually wave your hand over the sensor for the cycle to begin. The other mode is Automatic where the cycle will automatically begin after the door is closed.
You can change this setting with the UVone app. To download the app go to the iOS or Google Play app store and search “UVone Configurator”. To learn more about the app view the video on the right side of this page.
At what wavelength(s) is the UV light produced?
254nm
What table stand would you recommend for UVone?
UVone works with any universal VESA mount that can hold at least 11 lbs. (5 kg).
If you’re looking to purchase on Amazon we’d recommend this one. It looks great and works well at just under $30. It will take approximately 15 minutes to install. Of all the hardware that comes with the stand you only need to use A, C, E and F. It did not include screws though to fix the stand plate to ours so you will need to remove (4) of screws from the inner mounting plate of UVone and use them to mount their plate then to the one on back of UVone.
If you’re looking to purchase through Dell we’d recommend this one. It looks great and works well at just under $30. It will take approximately 15 minutes to install. Of all the hardware that comes with the stand you only need to use screws labeled “M-C” and thumb screws. We do not recommend using the screws that are with included with mount to fix the stand plate. Instead, you should use the ones on the plate of UVone unit. You will need to remove (4) of screws from the inner mounting plate of UVone and use them to mount their plate then to the one on back of UVone.
What are the maintenance requirements?
It is critical to wipe down the interior using an effective glass cleaner to make sure the quartz is clean. This may differ per organization and use, but we would recommend at least once per week.
What is the life of the bulb, and how do I change bulbs?
The bulbs will last for a total of 25,000 hours of disinfection time.
Which translates to 3M uses in manual cycle mode or 1.5M uses in automatic cycle mode.
There are a total of 16 bulbs. 14 large bulbs and 2 small bulbs. The wattage of each large bulb is 6 and small, 4.5.
If a bulb change is required, you will be prompted as such on unit display. You can view what specific bulb is requiring replacement through the app. If you are not prompted to replace your bulb(s) we recommend you do so every 10 years. If replacement is needed, contact LocknCharge, and we will provide step-by-step instructions. We recommend this is done through your maintenance team or by utilizing 3rd party services that administer these types of white glove services. If you have questions, please contact our customer support team.
Can I stop a cycle mid-cycle?
Yes, you can stop the 30-second cycle at anytime by waving your hand in front of the sensor at the top of the device.
My unit displays "Warming Up". What is it doing and how long will this take?
The stations does this after an hour of non-use and lasts 2 minutes. It does this to ensure the bulbs ignite quickly when a disinfection cycle takes place.
Should there be a power loss to the UVone station, how do I get my device out?
There is a recess for your finger to pry the door open manually when there is no power to the unit.
Is UVone effective in killing COVID-19?
COVID-19 is actual the name of the disease and not the virus. The virus that causes COVID-19 is SARS-CoV-2. It’s considered a Class B infectious disease, so is subject to BSL3 testing. Most commercial labs are not qualified to conduct this testing. In fact, there are less than 1,400 labs worldwide that are qualified to test for SARS-CoV-2. That being said, “Human Coronavirus 229E” is considered an acceptable “surrogate” for SARS-CoV-2. We are currently in process of testing for Human Coronavirus 229E. We should have these test results shortly. We have recently identified a lab that will be able to test UVone with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. With a limited number of labs, and these labs being very high in demand, this testing will take a bit longer, but we should have this data soon.
What does the UBone Configurator app do?
The app allows the user to:
- check if a replacement bulb is required, if so, which bulb
- pushes through any updates to bugs or firmware
- change from Manual to Automatic mode
- change cycle time
What's the difference in Manual vs Automatic Cycle Mode, and how do I switch my station?
Manual Mode requires an additional hand wave for a cycle to begin, vs. Automatic Mode which starts a cycle when the door is closed.
Therefore, when a user takes his/her device from UVone after a disinfection cycle ends and waves their hand to close again, it will automatically run another disinfection cycle without a device inside. UVone cannot recognize if a device or object is inside.
As a result, while in Automatic Mode, the life of the bulbs is reduced to 1.5M uses vs. Manual Mode, which is 3M uses.
Switching between modes is very easy, and can be done through the UVone Configurator app, with a simple toggle on/off to switch between the two modes of operation.
Is there anything that shows how many uses the UVone has completed?
The app shows the amount of time it has disinfected.
My unit has a bit of a smell to it. Should I be concerned?
No, that’s perfectly normal and within the accepted tolerance levels. There is a very, very small amount of ozone production that our noses can detect, but is still well below the EPA recommended ambient concentration of 0.05ppm.
Do the UV-C bulbs have a safety coating?
There is not a safety coating on the bulbs; however, they are behind quartz glass–so the user is protected.
Can I use UVone to disinfect masks or patient gowns?
UV-C technology works well to disinfect hard, non-porous surfaces. While it does work on fabrics to some extent, it’s impossible to conduct an accurate study to support kill rate claims. For this reason we cannot make any kill rate claims using masks or fabrics of any kind with UVone.
What certifications or regulations does UVone have?
UVone certifications include: ETL, CB, CE, FCC, IEC, ROHS and WEEE, coupled with our production facility being registered with the EPA.
UVone is ETL certified. ETL and UL/ULC test to the same standard. The only difference being the different certifying body that issues the certification; though they all certify to the same standard that is accepted globally and interchangeably. For this reason we are only pursing ETL certification at this time.
UVone does not require EPA product registration, although because it is considered a device that claims to kill pesticides (virus’, germs) the production facility must be registered with the EPA. Our EPA establishment # is 98611-CHN-1.
UVone is not considered a medical device; therefore, it is not not regulated by the FDA.
Are the bulbs LED?
No, the bulbs are mercury CCFL bulbs. CCFL bulbs are much more efficient than LEDs in the UV-C spectrum.
Can I bring my UVone unit on a plane as either checked baggage or as a carry on?
Yes, there is nothing that falls within any TSA restrictions. However, as stated on the TSA website: “The final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint.”
